GROWTH GROUPS
A Growth Group is a committed, semester-based small group with higher expectations of attendance, study, and participation aimed at spiritual transformation. Growth Groups are designed to mature disciples in their vital union with Christ by equipping them for a life of Worship, Community, and Outreach.
Topics Offered
Community Group
This spring Cola. Pres. will begin a new sermon series through the first few chapters of Genesis found in our Old Testament. Likewise, our Community Group will be focused on the same topic and will be using Pastor David’s sermons as a springboard into various discussions, questions, and truths that arise from the text. If you are visiting the church, checking us out as a potential church home, or are a member but need something with low commitment/no commitment, this group is for you! Sign up to let us know you are interested, but know this group is meant to be a “come as you are able”. We just ask you bring a hunger to grow in connecting with others and the desire to understand your Bible better.
Epic of Eden
This spring we will explore the nuances, beauty, and continuity between the message of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Sign up and prepare to see the overarching story of grace and redemption that saturates the whole Bible and explore how you fit into this grand narrative! We invite you to jump into seeing the Old Testament as important Christian scripture and not as the “confusing part” to get through!
Every Good Endeavor
The average American works 38.7 hours a week, not to mention the duties that are required in home life. But, what is the purpose of work? Is it a result of humanities sinfulness or is it a part of our glorious design, given to us by Go? If you are interested in understanding your work through the biblical lens of the gospel, see every moment of your life as an act of worship, and want to tackle understanding the intersection between work and faith... this group is for you!
Getting the Message
Opening your Bible is one of the most soul nourishing, transformative, and peaceful things you can do... yet, there are times it can feel daunting, confusing, and bland. If you want to grow in reading, understanding, and interpreting your Bible with confidence and precision, look no further than this group! We will go through Dr. Dan Doriani’s book “Getting the Message” and use to time to grow and hone our biblical interpretation skills.
Genesis Study- “God of Creation”
Do you want to start your year off by going deep in Genesis alongside a group of other women? Join us as we study Genesis 1-11 using Jen Wilkin’s inductive study guide. These two Genesis Jen Wilkin groups will meet weekly to discuss the daily Bible study work. Check out the table of contents and a sample here and see if this is a good fit for you this spring.
Newly Married Group
This Growth Group is designed for those in their first 5 years of marriage that desire to grow in love for each other, love for God, and seek wisdom in communication for daily married life! If this group describes you, please join us this semester as we explore the building blocks of a godly marriage. As a note, this is not a “counseling” group, but a place where newly marrieds can rub shoulders with others in the same life stage for mutual friendship and encouragement!
*There will be no childcare for this group.
Old Testament Study
At Columbia Pres. we love our Bibles and each spring we focus on our Old Testament! If you are interested in understanding God’s Word in a deeper way, are seeking to apply the Bible to your life, and want to grow your affections for Jesus, look no further! Scan the options below and choose which Old Testament Growth Group grabs your attention. This will be a great time to learn in a community of curious Christians and to learn from our trusted Bible Teachers for a whole semester.
Puritan Breakfast
Having godly examples of what it means to live the Christian life are important. In 1 Corinthians 11:1 the Apostle Paul writes, “Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.” Sometimes you look to imitate those that are in your church, family, or friends . Yet, other times, we are encouraged into love and good works by reading good books of godly people from the past. Join us for a time of study, breakfast food, and fellowship as we pick up old puritan books and mine the riches of those godly saints who rested on Jesus alone for their salvation!
Side by Side
Life is strange and difficult at times. But where are places you go for comfort and wisdom, love and belonging? In his book, “Side By Side” Dr. Ed Welch shows us from the scriptures how we can care for and love each other as the church by offering concrete ways to show and receive care. Join us in this Growth Group for a semester as we consider the fact that we are a needy people yet are used by God as others need us!
Strengthening Your Witness
Evangelism can feel scary, intimidating and overwhelming to all of us. Join this group to learn with a group of people a different way of viewing evangelism! We're going to read verses, discuss, pray, learn and collaborate together with the goal of leaving this group being equipped and encouraged to build intentional relationships with those that don't yet have Christ for the rest of your life!
The Prodigal God
The story of the prodigal son and his stuck-up older brother has been told and explained 100 different ways and 100 different times. Sometimes Jesus’ famous parable is seen only through the lens of the two brothers, yet Dr. Keller writes in his book, “Prodigal God”, Jesus is showing us the God of Great Expenditure, who is nothing if not prodigal toward us, his children. God's reckless grace is our greatest hope, a life-changing experience, and the subject of this book.” Consider being a part of the study as we recapture and experience God’s never giving up love for His people this semester.
Theology for Everyday Life
When we hear the word “Theology” we typically run for the hills knowing that a dry and dusty lecture is on the way! In “Theology For Everyday Life” we want to change that. Come join us and explore the important relationship between how our beliefs effect the way we live. Come and study our church’s statement of faith as found in the Westminster Confession of Faith to see its very practical message for our lives. If you have questions or concerns on this class, or feel on the fence and don’t want to be bored to death, please email Trevor Allen.
Uncommon Ground- Living Faithfully in a World of Difference
--a collection of essays/stories curated by Timothy Keller and John Inazu
In "Uncommon Ground" Timothy Keller and legal scholar John Inazu bring together a variety of illuminating stories- their own and from others to answer the question "how can Christians interact with those around them in ways that show respect to those whose beliefs are radically different while remaining faithful to the gospel?' These stories, with wisdom, depth of feeling and deep encouragement, show how to live with confidence, joy, and hope in a complex and fragmented age of deep and often painful differences.
What is Reformed Theology?
Columbia Presbyterian Church is “Reformed” in our theology, but what exactly does that mean? Join us for a time us unpacking biblical doctrines that forms the way our church thinks about loving God, loving others, and how to live in this world under those biblical banners of reformed theology. This group is for those seasoned saints and for those new in their faith. The author of the book this group will use writes, “There are a lot of misconceptions in popular culture and the church regarding Reformed theology. Some references to it are positive, some negative. It’s time for a full, understandable explanation of what it really is and why it matters.”
